What Happens on a Sports Massage Course? What to Expect Day-to-Day
Booking onto a course sight-unseen can feel like a leap of faith, especially for something as hands-on as sports massage. Here's exactly what to expect, using Envisage's Level 3 and Level 4 courses as the example.
The overall structure
Both the Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage and Level 4 Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy are delivered over 8 in-person days each, typically spread across weekends to allow time between sessions for study and practice. Days run from 9am to 5pm and combine theory-based lectures with practical, hands-on workshops.
What the practical sessions involve
You should expect to practise massage techniques on your fellow learners, and have techniques practised on you in return, it's the only realistic way to build genuine hands-on competence. This means comfortable clothing is essential.
What to bring
✔ Comfortable clothing you don't mind moving around in, shorts and a T-shirt work well
✔ A change of clothes, since changing rooms are available on-site
✔ A notepad and pen for theory sessions
✔ Food and drink for the day
How you're assessed
Assessment is a mix of a workbook and worksheets completed throughout the course, online tasks, and observed practical assessments. There's no single high-pressure final exam, your competence is built and checked progressively across the course.
Why in-person delivery matters here
Sports massage is a fundamentally hands-on skill. Practising real techniques on real people, with a tutor watching and correcting your technique in the room, builds a level of confidence and competence that's very difficult to replicate through video-based or online-only learning.
