Sports Massage Therapy: How to Start Your Own Practice After Qualifying
Qualifying is only half the journey, turning a Level 3 or Level 4 qualification into a working practice takes a bit of planning. Here's a practical starting checklist.
Get the essentials in place first
✔ Professional indemnity and public liability insurance — non-negotiable before treating your first client
✔ A simple client intake and consultation process, including relevant medical history questions
✔ A clear record-keeping system for client notes and treatment history
✔ Basic equipment, a portable massage table if you're mobile, or a suitable treatment space if you're not
Decide how you'll work
Most newly qualified therapists choose between a few common models: renting space in an existing gym or clinic, working mobile and travelling to clients, or offering sessions from a home-based setup. Many combine sports massage with existing personal training work, treating their own PT clients alongside new massage-only clients.
Pricing your sessions
Rates vary significantly by location and experience, but self-employed sports massage sessions in the UK commonly range from around £35 to £60 per hour. It's generally sensible to start within the typical local range for your area rather than under-pricing significantly, since it can be harder to raise prices later than to adjust them down.
Building your first clients
-
Start with existing PT clients or gym contacts, if you have them
-
Ask early clients for reviews, most people research a therapist online before booking
-
Consider partnering with local gyms, sports clubs or physiotherapy clinics for referrals
-
Word of mouth remains one of the strongest sources of new clients in this field
Once you've qualified to Level 4
Adding Level 4 to your scope means you can also treat clients with muscular dysfunction and injury, not just general maintenance and event-related massage, which meaningfully widens the client base you can serve and often supports higher session rates.
