Mat vs Reformer Pilates: Which Instructor Qualification Should You Choose?

Mat vs Reformer Pilates: Which Instructor Qualification Should You Choose?

If you're researching Pilates instructor training, you've almost certainly come across both Mat and Reformer qualifications, and it isn't always obvious which one to start with, or whether you need both. Here's a clear breakdown.

The short answer

Mat Pilates is the foundational qualification and the correct starting point for everyone, it requires no prior instructing qualification. Reformer Pilates is a progression qualification that extends your scope into studio-based equipment work, but it requires an appropriate Mat Pilates qualification first.

What Mat Pilates covers

  • The full mat-based Pilates repertoire and core principles

  • Postural assessment and individual client programming

  • Delivering both group and one-to-one sessions

  • No prerequisite qualification, though prior Pilates experience is essential

What Reformer Pilates adds

  • Instructing group sessions using the Reformer machine in a studio environment

  • 30 foundation and intermediate Reformer exercises, plus setup and equipment handling

  • Requires an appropriate Mat Pilates qualification to enrol

  • A significant independent study component alongside in-person days

So which should you choose first?

Start with Mat. It's the qualification that opens the door to teaching at all, and it's also the prerequisite for Reformer. Many instructors qualify in Mat, build up teaching experience and a client base, then add Reformer once they're confident it's the direction they want to specialise in. studio-based Reformer work is currently one of the fastest-growing areas of demand in UK fitness.
