Level 3 vs Level 4 Sports Massage: What's the Difference?

Level 3 vs Level 4 Sports Massage: What's the Difference?

If you're researching sports massage qualifications, you've almost certainly come across both a Level 3 and a Level 4 course, and it's genuinely unclear from most course pages what separates them. Here's the short answer, and the detail behind it.

The short answer

Level 3 (Technical Specialist in Sports Massage Therapy) qualifies you to massage clients for preparation and recovery from exercise, pre-event, post-event, inter-event and general maintenance work. Level 4 (the Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy, Soft Tissue Dysfunction) builds on this and qualifies you to treat clients with muscular dysfunction and injury, a meaningfully different scope of practice.

What Level 3 covers

  • Anatomy and physiology specific to sports massage

  • Pre-event, post-event and inter-event massage techniques

  • Maintenance and restorative massage for general training clients

  • No prerequisite qualification needed to enrol

What Level 4 adds

  • Assessment and treatment of soft tissue dysfunction and injury

  • More advanced techniques, including deeper and more targeted rehabilitation-style work

  • A requirement to already hold the Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy, or an equivalent qualification

Do you need to complete both?

Not immediately, you can work as a Level 3-qualified therapist offering sports and maintenance massage on its own. But most therapists progress to Level 4 fairly quickly, since it significantly widens the range of clients you can help. Envisage offers a combined Level 3 and Level 4 package at a discounted price compared with booking each course separately, which is worth considering if you already know you want to reach Level 4.
