How to Become an Exercise Referral Instructor: Qualifications and Career Path

Exercise referral is one of the more structured specialisms to add to an existing fitness career. The pathway is clear, and the entry requirements are specific rather than vague. Here's exactly how it works.

Step-by-step pathway

  1. Hold an existing Level 2 or Level 3 fitness qualification mapped to a recognised CIMSPA professional standard e.g. gym instructor, core group exercise instructor, personal trainer, Pilates matwork instructor, or strength and conditioning trainer.

  2. Make sure you've completed a relevant anatomy and physiology unit within the last 3 years (or add this on for £150 if you haven't).

  3. Build at least 6 months of experience planning and delivering exercise sessions. This is recommended so you get the most from the course.

  4. Complete the Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Participation in Physical Activity: Long Term Health Conditions.

  5. Start building relationships with local GP surgeries, leisure trusts or community health schemes to receive referrals.

What the course involves

At Envisage, the course is delivered in-person over 5 days, combining theory-based lectures with practical workshops, at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

What if you don't have the anatomy and physiology unit?

You can complete this with Envisage for an additional £150, either remotely through home study or by joining the relevant session on one of their other courses.
