Do You Need Pilates Experience Before Starting an Instructor Course?
One of the most common questions before booking a Pilates instructor course is whether you need any formal fitness or teaching background first. Here's exactly what's required, and what isn't.
No formal prerequisite qualification
The Level 3 Diploma in Teaching Pilates (Practitioner) has no prerequisite qualification. You don't need a gym instructing certificate, a personal training diploma, or any other formal fitness credential to enrol.
But Pilates experience is essential
What is required, and genuinely essential, is regular, hands-on experience of Pilates as a participant. Course providers expect you to have attended classes consistently, so that you understand the movements, pacing and feel of a session from the inside before learning to teach it.
What else is expected?
✔ Be aged 16 or over
✔ Have basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology (desirable, not mandatory). Our pre-course learning platform helps you brush up beforehand.
✔ Be comfortable with the physical demands of practising and demonstrating movements throughout the course
What about Reformer Pilates?
Reformer training is different, it's a genuine progression qualification, and you'll need to already hold an appropriate Mat Pilates qualification before enrolling. It's not a starting point for complete beginners.
Still unsure if you qualify?
If you're not sure whether your Pilates background is "enough" experience, it's worth having a conversation with the course provider directly. Most are looking for genuine familiarity with the practice, not a specific number of years or classes.
