Course Summary
Learners will:

- Be able to plan, adapt and deliver group Reformer Pilates sessions that meet the needs of a range of participants, from newcomers through to improvers.
- Develop confidence in using studio Reformer equipment, including correct setup, adjustment and safety protocols.

How You're Taught
This qualification combines pre-course study and homework tasks with five days of in-person delivery. You will need to set aside time for independent study tasks both before and between your in-person days.
Pre-course Tasks
Introduction to Reformer history and fundamentals, completed in your own time before Day 1.
Day 1
Welcome and introduction to the course. You will observe and practice a beginner class, begin learning the 30 foundation and intermediate Reformer exercises (including Reformer setup and parts), cover health and safety, risk assessment and PAR-Q, and be introduced to your first assessment (Presentation).
Day 2
Observation and practice of an intermediate/improver class. Theory session on session planning (preparatory, main and closing phases). Practical sessions planning and practising warm-ups, main sessions and closing sessions.
Homework after Day 2
- Prepare and submit your 10-minute presentation on the history of the Reformer.
- Complete the 30-exercise worksheet task.
- Maintain and log your personal practice.
Day 3
Observation and practice of an advanced class, including options for progressions, modifications and use of other equipment. Plan and practice beginner and improver sessions for assessment. Review practical assessment criteria and begin summative assessments with tutor feedback.
Homework after Day 3
- Fully complete your two session plans for assessment.
- Prepare for your professional discussion on the 30 exercises.
- Continue logging your personal practice.
Days 4 & 5
Practice and prepare for assessment, followed by your formal practical assessments. Up to five learners will be assessed per day. The course concludes with completion of all paperwork.
Assessment
This course is assessed through a combination of written and practical tasks. Learners must complete the following assessments:
History and Fundamentals of the Pilates Reformer:
- 10-minute observed presentation on the history and benefits of the Pilates Reformer.
- Personal practice log (minimum 20 hours) and recorded practice session with self-evaluation.
- Exercise analysis worksheet covering 30 exercises from the foundation and intermediate repertoire.
- Professional discussion (20 minutes) with assessor.
Plan, Deliver and Evaluate a Group Reformer Session
- Written session planning records including session overview, risk assessment and PAR-Q+ for a group of newcomers and a group of improvers.
- Observed live delivery of one planned group session (minimum 6 participants, including at least 2 real participants).
- Written self-evaluation completed on the day
All assessments are graded as Pass or Refer.
Progression
This qualification extends your scope of practice and enables you to deliver group Reformer sessions in a studio environment. It forms part of the YMCA Level 3 Instructing Reformer qualification suite, which also includes One-to-One, Groups and One-to-One, and Diploma pathways for those wishing to progress further.
Entry Requirement
Learners must hold an appropriate Pilates Matwork qualification endorsed against the CIMSPA Pilates-Based Matwork Occupational Professional Standard, or equivalent.

A £100 non-refundable deposit is required to secure your place on the course.

FAQs
What happens if I need to miss a day due to illness or a pre-booked event?
It is in your best interest to attend as much of your course as you can. However, if you do need to miss a day or two, don't worry, we will help you to catch-up. We will send you the work that you miss over email or you may even be able to pop in to our office so that we can go through the missing bits with you. All that we ask is that you notify us of your absence as soon as you can so that support can be put in place. If you miss a large chunk of your course, we may transfer you onto a later course so that you are able to attend as many days as possible.
What support is available during my course?
We provide learner support on all our courses, including access to our learning portal, tutor guidance and study help (email, phone or in-person) to ensure you succeed in your qualification.
What time does each day start and finish?
Saturdays will start at 11.15am and finish at 5.30pm. Sundays will start at 10.30am and finish at 5.30pm
How many days is this course?
This course is delivered over 5 in-person days, plus pre-course study and homework tasks to be completed in your own time.
How much work will I need to complete in my own time?
There is a significant independent study element to this course. Tasks include a 10-minute presentation on the history of the Reformer, a 30-exercise analysis worksheet, a personal practice log of at least 20 hours with a recorded practice session and self-evaluation, two full session plans, and preparation for a professional discussion. Your tutor will guide you on timings and deadlines throughout the course.
Do I need a prior qualification to do this course?

Is there anything I need to complete before I start?
Yes, there is pre-course study on the history and fundamentals of the Reformer to be completed before your first in-person day. Instructions will be emailed to you once your booking is confirmed.
What do I need to bring?
- Wear clothing and footwear suitable for Pilates and studio-based exercise
- Grip socks (required for Reformer use)
- Notepad and pen
- Food and drink
Do we get a lunch break?
Yes, designated lunch breaks are provided each day. We advise bringing lunch with you to save leaving the venue.
