Course Summary

A course with two days of teaching with an additional date for assessment.

As long as you are familiar with a gym environment and want to follow a career path which involves children in the leisure industry, the Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing – Exercise and Physical Activity for Children is the qualification you need to get started.

When you successfully complete the course you will be awarded a YMCA awards Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing – Exercise and Physical Activity for Children, this qualification allows you to register with CIMPSA, where you will be placed on a directory and will be able to access further CPD training.

Completing this course allows you to progress onto other courses available at level 2, such as: Exercise to Music, Circuit Training, Group Indoor Cycling, Kettlebells & Suspended Movement Training.

You'll learn how to communicate with children effectively and motivate them to perform their exercise programme.

How You're Taught

The course is a mix of self-study and then face to face learning with our expert tutors.

An advanced understanding of anatomy and physiology including:

  • The heart and circulatory system
  • Energy systems and their relation to exercise
    • The musculoskeletal system
    • Postural and core stability
    • The nervous, endocrine and energy systems and their relation to exercise and health.

How to maintain health, safety and welfare in a variety of fitness environments, including the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults

How to write programmes that include safe and effective exercises for a range of clients, the health benefits of physical activity and the importance of healthy eating

How to communicate with children effectively and motivate them to perform their exercise programme.

The skills and knowledge required to plan and deliver structured health-related exercise and physical activity for apparently healthy children in the 5-15 age range inclusive

We advise you to take one week to complete the self-study part of the programme. In this time, you cover anatomy, physiology, health & safety and how to support clients in the fitness environment. We recommend you spend a minimum of two weeks completing this work. There is a workbook that must be completed prior to the start of the course. During this time a tutor will be available for support if you need it.

The course itself runs over four days. This is usually over two weekends. We do offer some midweek courses.

Course days run from 9 am until 5 pm and it is essential that you attend all of these days.

Assessment

During the course dates, you'll be asked to complete a written worksheet and some session planning documents. You'll also be assessed practically on-course, teaching some of your peers as if they were children. This gives you the chance to refine your skills under the watchful eye of the envisage staff, who will provide feedback and an action plan.

The final assessment must be organised by you, the learner, you will need access to a group (4 or more) of children aged between ages 5-14 for a planned session of approx. 45mins to an hour. This can be done at any venue across the region, Envisage doesn’t provide facilities or children for the assessment, this must be arranged by the learner. We can offer support to arrange if needed but see you organising this as an essential part of gaining the skillset required for working with children.

For any learner who hasn't already qualified as a fitness instructor in another discipline such as gym-based exercise or exercise to music. There are additional assessments required, which may have an extra cost. Please contact us for more information.
