A Level 3 sports massage therapist is required to plan, perform and evaluate sports massage treatments appropriate for pre-, post- and inter-event, maintenance and restorative purposes with clients and involves using a range of basic massage techniques. The aim of this qualification is to provide the skills, knowledge and competence required to do this. Please note: the scope of practice for a Level 3 sports massage therapist is restricted to working on dysfunctional tissue and excludes working on recent acute injuries or pre-existing conditions.
There are no pre requisites for this qualification but if you do not already have a Level 2 Fitness Instructor Qualification, there is some additional work and assessment (two short theory exams and 2 worksheets) to complete as a self-study task before attending the course. If you do already have a Level 2 Fitness Instructor Qualification, there is no pre course study required for this course but you will have to provide us with evidence (a copy certificate) of your Level 2 Qualification.
The Sports Massage course runs over 10 days, usually one or two days per week, usually at the weekend, and spread out to allow time to study the theoretical knowledge, to complete coursework and to practice practical skills. Course days run from 9.00-5.00PM and it is essential to attend all of these.
There are number of assessment elements to be completed, all of which are incorporated across the 10 days; assessment elements are spread throughout the course rather than all being at the end. There will be some additional work required away from the course to complete some of the assessment tasks. Assessment elements include a workbook and worksheets, along with a theory exam and assessment of practical skills.
If successful in all the assessment elements, students will be awarded a YMCA Awards Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage. This qualification allows entry to the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) at Level 3 & carries 16 REPs CPD points.
On completion of this course, students are eligible to progress onto YMCA Awards Level 4 Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy.
